Rebuilding Together Announces 20th Annual National Rebuilding Day

WASHINGTON, DC (April 08, 2008) — On April 26th thousands of low-income homeowners will have something to celebrate. Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities will undertake the 20th annual National Rebuilding Day. More than 200 Rebuilding Together affiliates across the country, with thousands of volunteers, will rehabilitate and improve the homes of low-income Americans at no cost. Recipients of services include the elderly, disabled, military veterans and families in need. 

National Rebuilding Day is a wonderful way to celebrate our year-round efforts in the communities in which we serve,” said Gary A. Officer, President & CEO, Rebuilding Together. Continued Officer, “at a time when the nation is dealing with an unprecedented housing crisis, there is an overwhelming need for our work. We make it possible for homeowners to remain in safe and healthy homes, keep their independence and dignity and preserve home equity, which in many cases is the sole source of personal wealth.”

Several major national corporate sponsors are on board to support National Rebuilding Day including Sears with Heroes at Home helping military families and veterans, the American Petroleum Institute supporting energy efficiency in home rehabilitation, and Lowe’s, sponsor of the Safe & Healthy Homes initiative.

 

National Rebuilding Day also kicks off a series of major events including the first annual HGTV Change the World. Start at Home community revitalization and environmental education campaign from April 28th through May 2ndThe week-long HGTV event will feature the completion of major community revitalization projects in partnership with Rebuilding Together, National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Natural Resources Defense Council. HGTV celebrities along with hundreds of volunteers will lend a hand in five cities ─ Denver, Baltimore, Twin Cities, New Orleans and Washington, DC.

“This year alone, with the help of an army of over 200,000 volunteers, Rebuilding Together expects to complete 10,000 home and community center projects nationwide, starting with this herculean effort on National Rebuilding Day,” said Officer. “This ambitious goal recognizes our 20 years of service to the community and the strength of our affiliate network going forward.”
