Rebuilding after Sandy: Gerritsen Beach

Superstorm Sandy has left thousands of low-income homeowners without safe and healthy housing. Rebuilding Together has dedicated itself to helping those families, many of whom having lived in Gerritsen Beach for generations, return to their homes.

On June 6th, five hundred volunteers helped rebuild the Gerritsen Beach community. Together, we renovated 7 homes, the Vollies Volunteer Firefighter Community Center, the community garden, and Kiddie Beach. The efforts of the volunteers support the ongoing work of Rebuilding Together NYC, local contractors, community members, and skilled tradespeople who have been making extensive critical repairs on these and other homes since Sandy hit and will be continuing to work in this and other affected communities for the foreseeable future

This work would not have been possible without the support of presenting sponsors Meredith Corporation and Lowe’s and supporting sponsors Aleve, Assurant, Brooklyn Community Foundation, CBRE, Choice Hotels, Crate & Barrel, and Philips Electronics. Our work wouldn’t be possible without these and so many other partners and we will continue to rebuild in the community over the summer.

  • Local leaders in attendance included NY State Senator Martin Golden, NY State Assemblyman Alan Maisel, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, as well as volunteer firefighters.
  • Several media outlets owned by Meredith Corporation volunteered and covered the event extensively.
  • Several national and local media personalities came out including Savannah Guthrie, Pat Kiernan, and Tara Cost.
