A Community Showing Up for Those Who Served
Rebuilding Together Greater Florida recently joined more than 70 volunteers in transforming the grounds of the Five Star Veterans Center, a residential facility that supports veterans in crisis in Jacksonville. Partnering with various community organizations, volunteers completed a full outdoor upgrade, strengthening a space dedicated to providing stability for local veterans.
Crews spent the day clearing overgrown landscaping, installing fresh gardens and building new outdoor features. The team constructed a greenhouse, added raised vegetable beds for the facility’s kitchen, assembled picnic tables and benches and created seating for outdoor movie nights. A new butterfly garden and refreshed pathways now brighten the center’s campus.

One of the most meaningful improvements was the renovation of a deteriorating barn into a functional woodworking shop, now a space where residents can learn hands-on skills and build confidence. Five Star CEO John Bear shared how transformative this addition will be, noting that it “helps rebuild purpose in the lives of the veterans here” as they work toward independence.
31 veterans currently reside at the center, receiving counseling, job training and support to navigate challenges such as PTSD, traumatic brain injuries and depression. Jacksonville City Council member Ken Amaro praised the volunteer effort, emphasizing that it expands the center’s ability to serve those who served our country. As Rebuilding Together Greater Florida CEO José Garcia shared, establishing a presence in Jacksonville has been a long-time goal and this project launch marks the beginning of a deeper partnership and impact.

Across the country, Rebuilding Together affiliates are committed to creating safe, healthy spaces for neighbors to thrive. Thanks to this collaborative effort, Five Star Veterans Center now has renewed outdoor areas and tools that will support veterans for years to come.
