Expanding Our Impact in Virginia

Rebuilding Together’s commitment to safe and healthy housing is evident every day in the work of our affiliates across the country, who make essential home repairs for neighbors in need. One affiliate expanding that reach is Rebuilding Together of Hampton Roads in southeastern Virginia.
While Virginia has been home to several Rebuilding Together affiliates making a significant impact in the communities of Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church and Richmond, the need for an affiliate in Hampton Roads was apparent. Housing expenses consume more than 30% of income for more than half a million households in the Hampton Roads region and half of the housing stock is more than 45 years old. When you combine repair and accessibility needs with issues like coastal flooding, the result is unsafe conditions for many of our neighbors, particularly the region’s veterans and older adults.

With the appointment of its first executive director, Natasha Stewart, a nonprofit leader and Navy veteran, Rebuilding Together of Hampton Roads is well-positioned to collaborate closely with the community to address unmet home repairs and accessibility needs.
The affiliate is quickly making a difference. Alongside corporate and community partners, as well as volunteers, Rebuilding Together of Hampton Roads made critical repairs and modifications to the homes of two families in need. With winter on its way, fixing a broken HVAC system was urgent for a single mother of three who has a child with severe asthma. Not only did volunteers and contractors restore the HVAC system, but they also replaced damaged doors, fixed a hole in the roof and weatherized windows to reduce heat loss, all at no cost to the homeowner. This winter, her family’s home is safer and warmer.

As a movement of neighbors helping neighbors, Rebuilding Together is playing a vital role in preserving affordable housing in Hampton Roads. Through strong partnerships, the affiliate is addressing critical repair needs because everyone deserves a safe, healthy place to call home.
