National Day of Mourning for Former President Jimmy Carter

On this National Day of Mourning, we celebrate and reflect on the life of President Jimmy Carter, a true advocate for human rights and affordable housing. His lifelong dedication to improving lives has made a lasting impact on our nation and the world.

During his presidency, President Carter championed fair housing solutions. In 1980, he signed the Housing and Community Development Act, which boosted funding for Section 8 and public housing and addressed critical needs for low-income Americans (National Housing Conference [NHC], n.d.). He also championed the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, which aimed to eliminate redlining and ensure equal access to credit in underserved neighborhoods (NHC, n.d.). These initiatives represent his vision for safe and equitable housing. 

Even after his presidency, President Carter continued his mission by partnering with Habitat for Humanity in 1984, dedicating his time to building homes and promoting affordable housing (Habitat for Humanity, n.d.). His hands-on approach highlighted the belief that everyone deserves a safe place to call home—a truth we believe in at Rebuilding Together. We echo President Carter’s emphasis on community revitalization and carry forward this belief, working with neighbors and partners to improve lives and strengthen communities. 

Beyond housing, President Carter’s global humanitarian efforts serve as an enduring example of selfless leadership. In 1982, he and Rosalynn founded The Carter Center, championing peace, health and human rights worldwide. His dedication earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 (NHC, n.d.).

President Carter’s legacy reminds us that one person’s commitment to others can inspire profound change. As we honor his legacy, let’s embrace and carry forward the values he represented: the power of community, a commitment to equity and the belief that everyone deserves a safe and healthy home.
