In Fremont, Nebraska, Rebuilding Together Platte Valley East recently wrapped up a landmark project that reflects the core of our mission: repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

On May 13, we welcomed community members, volunteers and supporters to an open house celebrating the transformation of a once-dilapidated property on Platte Street into a safe, beautiful and affordable home for first-time homebuyer Colin.

This home was more than a construction project—it was a vision for how communities can come together to address the critical need for affordable housing. Purchased through a partnership with the Greater Fremont Development Council and renovated with the support of generous local contractors, donors and volunteers, the house received over $60,000 in repairs. From a roof with a hole to unsafe floors and no plumbing, the home needed a full rehabilitation. Thanks to over 15 months of dedicated work, it’s now a shining example of what’s possible when neighbors help neighbors.

Colin, a young plumber apprentice and lifelong Fremont resident, was selected from five qualified applicants to purchase the home for $165,000—nearly $100,000 below the city’s median home price. In addition, a surprise gift of $1,529.10 was presented to him at the open house—donations collected through community events, local churches and even loose change found during the home’s cleanup.

“This gives me the opportunity to put down roots and be part of the community I love,” Colin shared, holding back tears as he accepted the ceremonial check and the keys to his new home.

Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg was also in attendance and shared words of encouragement at the open house: “This project is exactly the kind of effort we need more of in Fremont—community-driven, locally supported and focused on building the kind of city people want to live in.”

This project marks the first time Rebuilding Together Platte Valley East has purchased, renovated and sold a home to a first-time buyer. It won’t be the last. With lessons learned, loans repaid and continued support from the community, we're ready to replicate this success, one home at a time.
