Marcos, who is a veteran, and Jennie live in Denver’s Westwood neighborhood, in a multigenerational household with their adult grandchild. For more than 30 years, these grandparents have called this house their home.

Over the years, they diligently maintained the home, but it became challenging as they got older. So, they turned to Rebuilding Together Colorado.

With assistance from Lockheed Martin volunteers, Rebuilding Together Colorado made improvements to help the grandparents age in place. Changes included installing lever-handle doorknobs to make it easier for Marcos and Jennie, who both have arthritis, to open doors and replacing the toilet with a comfort height model. Other interior improvements ranged from painting kitchen cabinets to installing smoke alarms and carbon-dioxide detectors.

Outside improvements included cleaning gutters, painting a porch ceiling, installing low-maintenance landscaping and insulating the crawlspace under a bedroom. The latter, when combined with a new ceiling fan in the bedroom, will help make the space more comfortable in the summer and winter.

“We are so happy and thankful for all the work Rebuilding Together and Lockheed Martin did in our home,” said Marcos. “It was a fun day spent with great people.”
