At the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence in El Paso, Texas families who have survived domestic violence and sexual assault can cope with their trauma and find hope. Rebuilding Together El Paso partnered with the Junior League of El Paso to design, build and install a sensory gym for the children receiving treatment at the center.

The sensory gym, designed by Italia Aguilera, a design architect and Rebuilding Together El Paso board member, engages children in therapeutic play, improves motor skills, regulates emotions and develops sensory abilities while supporting overall development and providing a sense of normalcy and stability. The children and families receiving treatment at the center can find solace and support in the sensory gym, paving the way for their healing.

During several project days, sometimes even on a Sunday, the community organizations painted the walls of the indoor space and assembled the play equipment including swings, textured tactile boards and balancing, jumping and climbing devices. Rebuilding Together El Paso built the platform to hold the play equipment and collaborated with an artist from the Junior League of El Paso to paint a mural featuring mountains, birds, insects and wildlife.

Through the dedication and collaboration of community members, the sensory gym serves as a beacon of hope at the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence. The project is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, there are always kind-hearted individuals ready to make a difference – a testament to the power of collaboration, compassion and the transformative impact it can have on the lives of those in need.
