Richard, a U.S. Army veteran and his husband Tom have lived in their home for over 20 years. Richard’s life in San Francisco - where he lives with his husband, teaches vocal lessons, has access to the support and care of the VA and feels safe in his neighborhood and community, means the world to him.

When explaining his financial challenges and barriers to staying safe and healthy in his home Richard said, “I should probably escape from this expensive city like so many people, but I'm kind of married to living in such a beautiful and gay friendly place. I feel more safe here being myself than anywhere else in the world, this is my home.”

Richard has significant dust mite allergies, which have gotten worse because of their 60-year-old carpet. The allergies make him feel like he cannot breathe. In addition to the carpet, there were several other critical repairs needed.

Thanks to support from Wells Fargo, Rebuilding Together San Francisco was able to replace their carpet with new, non-allergenic flooring throughout the house, install street address numbers that are visible and install working smoke and CO2 detectors. Accessibility modifications were made to the toilet, shower, hallways and stairways throughout the home to ensure that Richard and Tom, both unsteady on their feet, can move around the home with ease and without risk of falling. These repairs have had a tremendous impact on Richard’s health. He and his husband are excited to have a safe home where they can age in place, and to be able to stay in a community where they feel comfortable and connected.
