Q: What is Rebuilding Together?

A: Rebuilding Together is the leading national nonprofit organization with a mission to repair the homes of people in need and revitalize our communities. Through our national network of affiliates, Rebuilding Together works proactively and collaboratively with community leaders, long-term residents, funders and volunteers to foster dialogue and create a movement focused on building safe and healthy homes and communities across the country.

Q: How did Rebuilding Together start?

A: In 1973, a small group of people in Midland, Texas, realized a growing need in their community. Homes in their community had fallen into disrepair and their neighbors were unable to fix them on their own. The group volunteered their time and skills to work together and provide the necessary repairs to their neighbors. Realizing the potential impact of this work, the group formed Christmas in April, with the intent of performing repair and rehabilitation work in their community every April.

News of the group’s good work spread slowly, but eventually achieved national recognition. The mission spread beyond the idea of providing service once a year in April to bringing together partners from all walks of life to help our neighbors year-round. We opened the national office in 1988 and became Rebuilding Together. Today, Rebuilding Together has grown into a premier nonprofit community revitalization organization.

Q: Where is Rebuilding Together located?

A: Rebuilding Together’s national office is located in Washington, D.C. However, our work is done through our network of more than 120 affiliates across the country! We currently have affiliates in 38 states and the District of Columbia and we are continuously growing our network. You can see a full list of Rebuilding Together affiliates here.

Q: How do I know if I qualify for help from Rebuilding Together?

A: Most of the neighbors we serve are those with low-income, veterans, people with disabilities, older adults or families with children. Eligibility for services is dependent on the homeowner’s Annual Median Income (AMI), typically eligibility is set at a household income at or below 80% of the local AMI. Each affiliate has different requirements for who they are able to serve, so we recommend reaching out to your local affiliate directly to see if you qualify.

Q: How can I apply for home repair help through Rebuilding Together?

A: Our direct services are provided to neighbors through our network of affiliates across the country. Using our online map tool, find the affiliate closest to you and reach out to them directly to apply for home repair assistance.

Q: Does Rebuilding Together assist homeowners or renters?

A: While most Rebuilding Together affiliates focus specifically on providing home repair help for those who own their homes, some affiliates do offer assistance to renters. Reach out to your local affiliate to see if they are able to assist you.

Q: My organization is interested in partnering with Rebuilding Together. What does that look like?

A: A partnership with Rebuilding Together can look different for every organization--volunteer projects, monetary donations or in-kind donations are a few examples. Contact your local affiliate to see what kind of partnership opportunities they may have available. Q: How does Rebuilding Together receive their funding?

A: Rebuilding Together and our affiliates receive funding through government programs like HUD, corporate donors and generous individuals!

Q: Is Rebuilding Together associated with any political organizations or groups?

A: No. Rebuilding Together is a nonprofit nonpartisan organization.

Q: What type of repairs does Rebuilding Together do?

A: Each Rebuilding Together affiliate has different capacities and projects they are able to complete. Some of our more common repairs include, but are not limited to: bathroom modifications (such as grab bars), roof repairs, installation of wheelchair ramps, repairing HVAC systems, replacing windows and doors, mold remediation, interior and exterior painting, yard maintenance and fire safety prevention (such as smoke alarms installations). 

Q: When do projects happen?

A: Rebuilding Together’s projects happen all throughout the year. Although April is National Rebuilding Month, our affiliates are still working year-round in their community. Reach out to your local affiliate to see when projects are happening in your area specifically.
