For three decades, AmeriCorps has stood as a shining example of service in the United States. It has brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds, uniting them under a common goal: to make a positive and lasting impact on their communities. As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of this important organization, it's not just an opportunity to reflect on its national impact but also how it has benefitted Rebuilding Together and our affiliates.

AmeriCorps' roots trace back to 1965 when Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) was founded as a domestic counterpart to the Peace Corps. In 1993, AmeriCorps*VISTA was integrated into AmeriCorps, paving the way for a comprehensive and impactful approach to service (AmeriCorps, n.d.). This transformation was a response to the call for a more engaged citizenry and a desire to tackle pressing social issues. It was further solidified by the signing of the Serve America Act in the same year (AmeriCorps, n.d., AmeriCorps VISTA section).

One of AmeriCorps' remarkable strengths is its ability to adapt to the ever-changing needs of communities. Whether it's responding to natural disasters, addressing public health crises or safeguarding our environment, AmeriCorps members are on the front lines, providing essential assistance where it's needed most (AmeriCorps, n.d.). Their dedication to service remains unwavering, even in the face of the most challenging circumstances.

Rebuilding Together adopted our own AmeriCorps program in 2008. Since then, Rebuilding Together has engaged more than 40 AmeriCorps members every year to make an impact on the lives of people in need and in communities across the country. Our members develop and apply valuable professional skills, earn money for education and are active citizens in local communities. As a part of Rebuilding Together, our members have the opportunity to serve their neighbors in need and their communities in a variety of roles - volunteer coordination, client outreach, project/program coordination or working on physical repairs for our homeowners. Many of our AmeriCorps members have gone on to become full-time staff members at their affiliate or our national office.

As we celebrate AmeriCorps' 30th anniversary, let us remember that its legacy is not just a story of the past but also a vision for the future. If you're inspired to make a difference, consider joining Rebuilding Together's AmeriCorps program. Through hands-on home repairs and modifications, Rebuilding Together's AmeriCorps members help improve the lives of neighbors in need.
