A Mother’s Day gift: a safe home for a family of five
Jeanette is a busy mom; she is the caretaker for her mother and has three children herself. The family of five calls Montgomery County, MD home. Jeanette takes care of many things, including essential home repairs, but when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and lost her job, she needed some extra help. She hired contractors who left her with unfinished work, including a non-functioning kitchen.
The family resorted to cooking on a hot plate because they had no working stove. Two weeks ago, the community rallied together to support Jeanette and her family. Rebuilding Together Montgomery County organized neighbors to replace Jeanette’s broken and outdated appliances, including a new washer, dryer and refrigerator. But they didn’t stop there. Volunteers installed a wheelchair ramp and grab bars, fixed her broken air conditioning unit, repaired leaking pipes, fixed broken electric outlets and patched the roof.
Today, Jeanette is cancer-free and has a positive outlook on life. This Mother’s Day she can focus on her family, making sure all five of them can continue to thrive for years to come in a safe home. Bringing neighbors together to help each other is what we do best at Rebuilding Together. We believe in a nation where everyone, regardless of income or circumstance, can count on the roof over their head—where we care for each other and create vibrant, resilient communities.
